SIR JAMES .O IBORI |
ABUJA MANSION |
We need to ask a few questions oooo, would the now convicted criminal- Mr James Onanafe Ibori still retain his many Chieftaincy titles after he must have finished his jail term? We can bet that there would be a major party to celebrate his home coming, after going to the war-front and conquering, in 13 years time. Remember Chief Olabode George was celebrated on his release from Kiri-kiri not too long ago.
How come with the avalanche of evidences, supposedly arrayed against him by the EFCC, they couldn't convict him or even convince the court to convict him on even one single count.
Is the EFCC or is it the Nigerian Judicial system totally compromised? The same allegations of crimes, against the same man, is what another court outside Nigeria, has now convicted him of and now sentenced him to 13 years in Jail for. Meaning if proper justice would prevail, the billionaire former 2-times Governor of Delta state and the cousin to the sitting Governor would only be out of jail by age 62.
But like it obtains abroad, he might not spend up to that in jail, if found to have being of good behavior, and we can predict very well now, that there is the likelihood he would be paroled on time.
What are some of the allegations against our former highly formidable, power-broker, who at a point could have become the vice-president of Nigeria, had things worked according to plan.
He stole or embezzled- 50 whopping Million Pounds, money from which he was said to have funded a life of luxury befitting a king.
Bought a 2.2 Million Pounds house in Hampstead that he paid cash for in 2001- this is amongst many- there is the one at Regents Park, another in Dorset, then a 3.2 Million Pound Mansion in Johannesburg and a flat in St. John's Wood, he also bought a jet for 12.6 Million Pounds, there were fleets of the best brands of cars imaginable-Bentley Continental for about 120,000 pounds for one, several Maybachs- one at the cost of 407,000 Euros, armored Range-Rovers etc, he also had a monthly credit card bill topping 125,000 Pounds. It is been speculated that the total amount, though unconfirmed as at yet embezzled is more than 157 Million Pounds.
His earlier conviction for petty theft, while in the UK in the 80's came to rub him in a bad way. Ibori who had escaped conviction in Nigeria later fled to Dubai, where he thought the long hands of the law could not touch him, he was reportedly arrested while trying to buy a $20 Million dollars jet.
Whether this particular conviction would act as a deterrent to other thieves in Government we don't know yet. But as long as they can still confidently buy their way out of conviction, then we still have a long way to go.
