STYLE 101 AT THE AMVCA 2013-THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE OUTRIGHT UGLY

OUTFIT BY APRIL BY KUNBI

OUTFIT BY BRIDGET AWOSIKA
Away from every other thing about the maiden or inaugural edition  of the AfricaMagic Viewers Choice Award 2013. It was the first ever edition of what should turn out to be one of the best thing to happen to movie and entertainment in Africa. Like someone said, this is our own OSCARS, so we all should support to get to the highest level. Nigeria should be commended for being the host of the first show. Though there were little technical hitches here and there, the organisers still delivered on all points. Kudos to them for a job well done.

We are sure this is one of the biggest events hosted in Lagos, Nigeria for a while now. 1500 guests from all the different sectors came. The Federal Government was ably represented by the Ministers of Petroleum Resources (Diezanni Allison-Madueke), For Culture & Tourism (Chief Edem Duke) & For Trade & Investments (Olusegun Aganga). Curiously the host state, Lagos was missing in action, no State Governor, and we didn't hear of any representatives.

Away from all of that and to how our stars, celebrities etc did on the style stake. Not wanting to talk too much, some of these stars/celebrities seem to have come to the understanding of their shapes, sizes, body contours very well, so they always make sure to dress to accentuate their best features. Style-wise, some seem to have a good understanding of the number one rule of fashion and watchword; Simplicity, while others still need to go to school to learn or something. When you try to do too much or take on what's not your forte, you just go terribly wrong.

Let's just check out some of the one's we saw, Genevieve Nnaji, our ever gorgeous actress seem to define the word simplicity in every facet, either she's absolutely good by herself or her stylist must be very good. She first wore a simple well cut, white outfit that was made for her by one of Nigeria's fastest growing and most impressive designers in a while, Bridget Awosika. It was a sexy, yet very functional dress;  which showed just a hint of the chest, without being vulgar. For her change of outfit, she wore what we have tagged as ''yellow like gold''. The colour seems to be one of the colours of the season and it takes the bold to wear it, as there's a thin line between getting it well and missing it. Never knew, Genny had such nice curves on such petite frame. Outfit was by April by Kunbi, a Nigerian label owned by New York trained Kunbi Oyelese.

No wonder, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is admired by many, now we understand why she's famously called Omo-Sexy. That shape 'WE MUST SAY' is deadly! She arrived on the red carpet wearing a shape enhancing dress by Iconic Invanity who seem to have become one of her favourite labels to wear to events, the apparent message is that since you have the body, show it off. For her change of cloth, she transformed into a goddess kind-of, wearing a black sequined outfit, made especially for her by another upcoming designer great in the making Ejiro Amos-Tafiri.

Another of our very famous thespians, the elegant and ever delicious looking Rita Nkem Uchenna  Dominic Waturocha, known to most as just Rita Dominic stepped up on the style stake, like she normally always does. She seem to be favouring Nude colour  now, as she wore a similar colour to Uche Jombo-Rodriguez's film premiere. This particular ensemble was made for her by another upcoming design maven- Olayinya Fashola of House of Moofa. The one hand wonder dress, looked good on her and she topped it with a beautiful head-wear, we heard she was styled by Ebun Aboderin.  Beautiful outfit no doubt, but thought she should have played down on the neck-wear a bit, especially because of the head-wear. Too many things calling for attention all at the same time.

Rukky Sanda- Kept it simple and exquisite this time around. No sheer thank God. Didn't know she had a Tonto like tattoo at her back, cool if one is into such. Either she dressed herself or she finally listened to her stylist. Any which way she did try. Her outfit was by a UK based designer called Fashionista.

Funke Akindele-Oloyede's white outfit with the gold studs was a delight to look at, kudos to her for getting it right. She was looking gorgeous all over. The cleavage shown wasn't even distasteful. The beautiful dress was by Jovani.

Tiwa Savage- Was also in a simple blue dress, but she should make sure to put that sweat patch in check next time.

Nkechi Okocha- Looked cool in the short bustier dress in pink, husband JJ apparently didn't think occasion deserved dressing up for at all.

Quick run through now- Linus Idahosa- What was the essence of the turtle-neck in a very temperate zone like ours? If not for that, you were looking cool as always.

Julius Agwu- As always you defined 'sharpishness'. Please permit that word, you looked on point, your outfit fitted like a glove and we particular loved the tan shoe combo with the blue suit. You got it spot on.

Taryor Gabriel- The young upcoming, bespoke tailor/designer also stood out. We particularly loved the whole ensemble and the flow of it on him and the slim, blue tie. He got away with wearing a pair of black shoes on Blue suit. Which many style purist would have frowned at. But he looked good, very dapper.

Ohimai Atafo- Head Designer & former Fashion Editor at Genevieve Magazine. He wore a well made double-breasted, Black suit. He epitomized suave elegance. We particularly loved that he loves to challenge the status quo. We overhead, Julius Agwu making an order for the same outfit. We particularly love the suede accent on the lapel. Though we loved the package, we thought by trying to tone it down with the shoe, took the styling down a bit. But one of the best dressed men of the day.

O.C Ukeje- Apart from deserving to win and even giving a good acceptance speech. He was well dressed in the normal black-tie suit combo.

Noble Igwe- The MD of 360 Nobs always does his best to look good at most occasions. For this particular occasion he favoured a blue suit, that fitted him to perfection and he accentuated with a tan shoe, for perfect execution. He was well shaven and we loved the spectacles he had on.

Latasha Ngwube- one of the Glam Squad and a member of the editorial team at Vanguard. For a plus sized lady to be as stylish as she is, we give kudos! She carried herself well, her royal blue outfit, made for her by Jane Jacobs a label owned by the daughter of Ex-Governor of Oyo State, Chief Alao Akala was gorgeous. Men those boobs! Were the boobs of life.

Chidi 'GQ' Mokeme- The yellow or whatever attachment to his shirt was a total distraction. Those shoes also didn't do him any favours.

Halima Abubakar- Loved the pink outfit, thought it was well worn by her. The only distraction was that black fur or mink jacket.

Ufuoma McDermott- was the epitome of grace in her emerald green dress with the tail.

Elohor Aisien- Looked good in a classy, one shoulder dress, with the magnificent slit on the right leg.

Ono Bello- We have always said she's one of the best dressed young ladies around. A gorgeous eligible bachelorette at that. Though as statuesque as ever, we thought the dress was too wedding like. The hair.......................................??????.

Bobby Karibi-Whyte- Simple is everything seem to have been her watchword. She wore a very simple, nice black outfit, with a short slit just above the knees.

Lilian Esoro- Nice.

Oluchi Orlandi- Gorgeous outfit.

Ojy Okpe-  Just there.

Fathia Balogun- Beautiful.

Ndidi Obioha- Nice outfit. Definitely on point. She always dress well.

Grace Egbagbe- Classy and age appropriate. We love.

Mo Abudu- The day she gets it wrong , we would definitely walk a tight-rope. She was the epitome of gorgeousness and class. Her inner confidence always exude and grabs you.

Ruth Osime- Being the editor of a style magazine must really count for something we believe, our own version of Anna Wintour must not and cannot let her style down or else, she'll be roasted alive. Her yellow mono-shoulder outfit fitted her to the t and was classy. And she had the right accompaniment. Wink wink!!

Bovi Ugboma & wife looked really look. Kudos!

Matse Uwatse- Favoured a long blue dress, that was beautiful in its simplicity, that drop at the back on point. Just a hint of sexiness.  No unnecessary frills & thrills.

Saint Obi- He wore a nice grey suit, white shirt sans tie and finished it off, with a matching white shoe! We cannot understand that white shoe. Kudos to him anyway that the shoe was very clean.

Susan Peters & Bimbo Akintola-  For the first time in a while, Susan didn't wow us in this outfit, reason for this.....the legs. As for Bimbo Akintola, she wore a black short outfit, that she could have worn to any cocktail party.

Linda Ejiofor of Tinsel, went Goth in our estimation, the voluminous frills at the shoulders of her white dress, the sequined black pants and the black lip-gloss. She looked very different and must have gotten loads of attention. Apparently she wore an outfit by Aisha Shaba of Pretty Mei

Karen Igho- Did we love the outfit worn by the BBA winner? Yes we do, apart from the fact that little was left to the imagination on the chest side, it was good outfit she had on.

Lanre Da Silva- As always her shoes were a point of reference.

One particular man wore a transparent lace outfit, another one wore a tan belt and black shoes, a particular lady, took her makeup use to another level. The foundation and lip-gloss were should we say outstanding!

Tony Okoroji, wore a cream 4-buttoned jacket. And he buttoned up all of it, a black shirt, burgundy tie and red pocket square and finished it off with a black patent pair of shoes. Apart from the buttons, he did try!

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu- If you have his kind of body and don't dress well. The person needs caning for life. He looked very dapper and carried himself well.

DJ Exclusive- The handsome dude looked incredibly good in his suit.

DJ EXCLUSIVE
All in all. If our stars and celebs would allow, many would make a fortune being  stylists.  We also love the fact that our stars/celebs and designers are collaborating. If we don't help ourselves who would do it for us.
